To make a diagnosis of a chemical pregnancy, blood work is done to assess levels of hCG. A sudden decrease in hCG levels, can indicate a miscarriage. After undergoing several hCG tests, often an ultrasound is done to find any signs of life in the uterus. With a chemical pregnancy, no implantation of an embryo will be seen and no heartbeat will be heard. There is goods news for women who have experienced a chemical pregnancy, and that is that having a chemical pregnancy proves that you are indeed capable of conception. Usually a chemical pregnancy is not indicative of a fertility problem. Although, fertility experts say if a woman has at least three or more consecutive pregnancy losses, genetic testing and blood work up should be done to determine the cause. A great majority of women who encounter a chemical pregnancy go on to have happy and healthy pregnancies in the future. Actually, the likelihood of experiencing multiple chemical pregnancies is very remote.

Chemical pregnancies are usually caused by chromosomal problems which prevent the fetus from developing properly. Other causes can be from not enough uterine lining, uterine abnormalities such as fibroids, low hormone levels, luteal phase defect, or some infections. A vast number of chemical pregnancies are unable to be prevented. If recurrent chemical pregnancies happen, a doctor should investigate to find the optimum treatment. Possible treatment options are vitamin B6 (at least 50mg a day), progesterone cream, and baby aspirin. If infection is the cause, antibiotics will be prescribed. If fibroids are the cause, surgery to remove them may be necessary.

Today’s home pregnancy tests are formulated to verify pregnancy through the detection of the hormone hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in a sample of urine. When an egg is fertilized and implants to the uterine wall, the body will begin to produce this hormone. If the embryo is shed it’s called a chemical pregnancy. When using these home test kits so soon after a chemical pregnancy it should be kept in mind that hCG levels may still be elevated, which may create a false reading. Therefore, it is prudent to wait a few days after a missed period to test for pregnancy.

The clinical term chemical pregnancy is used in describing a very early miscarriage. With improvement in home pregnancy tests on the market today it is easier to receive a positive result, even four days before a menstrual cycle is due. These early pregnant tests will show a chemical pregnancy, one which would not have been discovered if the woman waited for her period. Most women do not know that they have experienced a chemical pregnancy, because the majority of these type of pregnancies happen in the first six weeks of pregnancy, or a missed period may not have happened yet, therefore the woman would not know she was pregnant in the first place. Chemical pregnancies are very common, occurring in approximately 50 – 60% of first pregnancies, and again, most occur without the woman realizing she is pregnant.

Women with endometriosis often feel alone in their suffering as it is frustrating to have a disease that few people are aware of, or want to discuss. Women with endometriosis are further hindered because the disease is not recognized in the media. Endometriosis can cause trouble with every aspect a woman’s life, from relationships, work, and every day activities as the pain can interfere with living life to the fullest.

Misconceptions about endometriosis still continue today, so education is critical. Screening for endometriosis should be done if a mother or sister has been diagnosed with endometriosis or if there are problems with conceiving after trying for 1 year.

When endometriosis affects the reproductive organs, then fertility is compromised. 30 – 40% of women with endometriosis are infertile. Endometriosis is also be subtle in the way it affects womens bodies. Recent studies indicate that the simple presence of this disease, whether it is, mild or minimal, at any stage, may be to blame for implantation and immune system problems in some women. Studies have shown that women with endometriosis have an elevated risk for increased levels of APA (antiphospholipid antibodies), which is linked to continuing miscarriage, intrauterine growth retardation, and pre- eclampsia. Other, even more subtle effects, are caused by endometriosis. It may increase the macrophages (natural scavenger cells) in peritoneal fluid which may kill off sperm, egg, or embryo. One study linked endometriosis with production of poorer quality eggs

The pain of endometriosis can be very debilitating, impacting lifestyles drastically. In advanced stages of endometriosis, scar tissue and adhesions may develop, distorting internal anatomy, making organs mingle together causing a condition referred to as frozen pelvis. Pain from endometriosis occurs before, during or after menstruation. This pain is felt in the pelvis, lower back, in the bowel, while urinating, and during sex. Other symptoms are diarrhea or constipation, bloating, heavy or irregular bleeding and fatigue.

The cause of endometriosis is unknown, although there are several theories. One suggests that the endometrial cells which are loosened during menstruation, “back up” into the fallopian tubes and to the pelvis, implanting and growing in the pelvic or abdominal cavities. (Retrograde-menstruation). Some other theories include problems with the immune system and a hereditary factors.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue/lesions, which are comparable to those of the lining of the uterus are located in other parts of the body. These lesions are found in the pelvic cavity, fallopian tubes, on the ovaries, uterine ligaments, rectal-vaginal septum, as well as found on scars from laparotomy, C-sections, or in the intestines, appendix, colon and rectum. Rarely, endometriosis is found inside the vagina, bladder, on the skin, lung, spine or brain.

Pelvic pain is the most common symptom of endometriosis. This pain comes and goes in correlation with the menstrual cycle, but often the pain does not correspond to the cycle at all.

A woman can develop antibodies to her mate’s sperm. To combat this, stop releasing sperm for a month, via a condom, etc. This may cause her sperm antibodies to decrease. Do not use anabolic steroids as they can shut down the pituitary gland, which will put the hormonal system out of balance. Athletes often have fertility problems. Long-time use of steroids can permanently damage the testicles. Keep the testes from over heating, as this produces sterile sperm for up to a day afterward. The testes must remain a half degree cooler than core body temperature. Fevers to the body, close-fitting underwear, or hot tubs, saunas should be avoided as they can also cause changes in ovulation.

These balance hormones and increase fertility. The use of natural progesterone cream has helped many women become pregnant. An excellent alternative is wild yam, which contains progesterone. Rub it on the abdomen. Use egg whites as a lubricant instead of petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly may kill sperm; the egg whites may help them as they travel, so use egg whites during the fertile days each month. Egg whites are pure protein, and studies have shown that it is the best lubricant to use when conception is desired. Avoid stress and fatigue. Take a vacation, relax, rest, and create!
