Pregnancy By Insemination
Insemination procedures can improve a couples chance of experiencing the thrill of pregnancy and joy of raising a family.
The eggs that are collected are classified on the basis of morphologic criteria, these criteria dictating when insemination should take place relative to ova aspiration.. The sperm used for insemination are collected by masturbation. Semen is allowed to liquify at room temperature for 30 minutes and washed in a modified culture medium. The sperm suspension is centrifuged at 20 x G for 5 minutes, the sperm are washed and incubated for 1 hour in 5% C02 with the sperm allowed to swim. The uppermost layer of motile sperm are then placed in separate test tube, counted and the egg inseminated. Then, the inseminated egg is incubated at 37°C in humid atmosphere of 5% C02 and air for 18-21 hours. The egg and the sperm are then fertilized in the laboratory, by direct injection of a single sperm into each egg. Three days later the resulting embryos are placed into the uterus. Extra embryos can be frozen for later attempts at pregnancy
